About
Cynthia Good Mojab, MS clinical psychology (1996), is a clinical counselor, private
researcher, author, educator, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant
(IBCLC), and Registered Lactation Consultant (RLC) focusing on issues related to
culture, psychology, and the family—particularly as they relate to breastfeeding and
the needs of women during their reproductive years.
Cynthia’s approach is eclectic and collaborative. She values forming a partnership
with clients and their other health care providers. Within this partnership, clients
identify and use their inherent strengths and capabilities to move toward learning,
healing, and growth.
Cynthia completed a year-long internship in solution-focused brief therapy as part
of her training in clinical psychology at Illinois State University. In addition to this
therapeutic approach, she uses the concepts and techniques of interpersonal
psychotherapy, cross-cultural counseling, family systems theory, grief counseling
and therapy, cognitive therapy, and other approaches.
As a cross-cultural researcher, Cynthia understands the impact of culture on birth,
breastfeeding, and mothering—and on the counseling process itself. As an
IBCLC, she brings the concepts, techniques, and ethics of lactation consulting to
her work with women, health care providers, and institutions. Well-versed in the
evidence base of breastfeeding management and support, she provides
counseling and consulting services that incorporate the importance of maternal-
child attachment and breastfeeding. She is keenly aware of the intertwined
development and well-being of mother and child. Her services seek to meet the
needs of mothers and their children without sacrificing one for the other.
As one of a small group of mental health care providers in the world who are also
IBCLCs, Cynthia has a strong interest in lactational psychology. She is the founder
and moderator of LactPsych, an email discussion group for professionals working
in this emerging field. She is a member of the American Academy of Experts in
Traumatic Stress and is Board Certified in Acute Traumatic Stress Management.
She sought these credentials because of her concern about the impact of
traumatic birth experiences on breastfeeding, mothering, and maternal and child
well-being. As a member of Mothering magazine’s web site’s Expert Panel, she
answers questions about breastfeeding and maternal mental health. She has
experience providing both psychological and breastfeeding counseling. Cynthia is
also a nationally recognized speaker on breastfeeding, culture, parenting, and
psychology. She is an award-winning researcher whose multicultural work was
recognized in 1995 by the American Psychological Foundation. Her other website,
Ammawell, offers breastfeeding and parenting information and support, including
access to her publications and speaking schedule. Her work has been translated
from English into Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Polish, Croatian,
Hungarian, and Chinese.
